1000 Words Australia Terms and Conditions 2014-2016 1000 Words Competition Terms and Conditions
1. Each writer and photographer may enter as many times as they wish with different entries
provided the entry fee is paid for each of these as a separate submission, thereby increasing
your opportunity to become a finalist. However, each writer and photographer may only be a
finalist once - only one piece of writing from each author and one image from each
photographer may be selected as a finalist for the exhibition.
2. Entrants may submit to both components, writing and photography, to further increase their
chances of being shortlisted, but the rules above still apply - entrants cannot submit
photographs for their own written entries.
3. There are two categories: An Open category for 16 years old and above, and a Youth
category up to 15 years old.
4. There is an entry fee of $30 per submission for Open category entries and $15 per submission
for Youth category entries. (Writing or Photography)
5. This competition is open to all residents of Australia
6. It is expected that all shortlisted finalists be available for the opening night of the exhibition ,
scheduled for Saturday 6th February 2016 (subject to change if required in which case all
finalists would be contacted in advance).

8. Opening date for submissions of written entries is October 1st 2014.
9. All written works will be a short story with a main theme or story written in exactly 1000 words.
It has been said that an image can tell a thousand words. This competition is going to show
that it is possible - literally. There is no constraint on subject matter for your piece and no
themes you need to adhere to. Create Away!
10. Closing date for written entries will be 31 March 2015. After this date no further written
entries to the competition will be permitted. Entrants may submit their work prior to this date.
11. Shortlisted finalist written entries will be posted on the Facebook page above on the 30th April
2015. The purpose of this is to allow the photographers to look through the written entries to
choose and prepare their photographic responses to the main theme or emotion of the written
works.
12. All shortlisted written entries will be posted on the Facebook site noted above without author’s
names (as they will be revealed at the exhibition opening night). Ownership credit to the
authors for all works posted on the Facebook site will be revealed after the opening on the site,
and in any place where the works are reproduced or exhibited.
13. Opening date for submissions of photographic entries in response to the shortlisted written
articles is May 1st 2015.
14. All photographic entries must be presented as one image. No montages or multiple frames of
images will be accepted. Post processing should be kept to a level where the overall finished
look maintains a natural photographic appearance.
15. Closing date for photographic submissions will be 31October 2015. After this date no further
photographic entries to the competition will be permitted. Entrants may submit their work prior
to this date.
16. For both writers and photographers - it may be advantageous to submit your entries earlier
than the advertised deadlines as those who submit works early may have the opportunity for
possible feedback and further collaboration with the editors/photographers leading the project.
Please note that not all entries received will require this further editing, and
non-contact is not be an indication of your work being shortlisted or not shortlisted.
17. It is accepted by these terms and conditions that as an entrant, you will not disclose
your writing or photographic images in draft or any other form or otherwise provide any
“sneak peeks” of your work for this competition. The final pieces selected will be disclosed in
their entirety for the first time on the opening of the exhibition, scheduled for February 6th
2016. Organisers have the right to withdraw any material where the author/photographer has
willingly disclosed their work in any fact or form if it is deemed to have compromised the entry
in any way. Please do not share your ideas and entries on the Facebook page.
18. Photographs selected as finalists for the exhibition will be posted on the Facebook page above
shortly after the opening of the exhibition once all artists have been revealed at the opening.
19. Shortlisted entries will receive a notification via sms or email to confirm this status shortly after
the respective closing dates for each artist. No responsibility can be accepted for entries not
received for whatever reason.
20. It is expected as a finalist that you will attend the opening of the exhibition on February 6th
2016 at a venue to be confirmed closer to the exhibition date.
21. Copyright of all material entered from all artists remains the property of the artists. In
entering your works into 1000 Words, you are also giving permission to have your entries used
by the organisers for future promotional material, exhibitions and publications, with credit given
for use to the creators of the written material and images.
22. The organisers will fund the printing of the selected finalists work for the exhibition.
23. All pieces must have been written or photographed specifically for this body of work, however
the entries may then be used in other competitions by their creators after the opening
exhibition of 1000 Words.
24. Credit will be given to every entrant whose work is shortlisted and a finalist through the various
publishing avenues, such as Facebook and printed publications.
25. There will be no other payments made to any entrants other than the prizes listed below.
The rules of the competition and the prize for each winner are as follows:
26. Prizes - Open
a. Each collaborative artist of the overall winning combined entry will each receive a
cash prize of $500.
b. Each collaborative artist of the overall second place combined entry will each receive
a cash prize of $250.
c. Each collaborative artist of the overall “people’s choice” combined entry will each
receive a cash prize of $100.
27. Prizes - Youth
a. Each collaborative artist of the overall winning combined entry will each receive a
cash prize of $200.
b. Each collaborative artist of the overall second place combined entry will each receive
a cash prize of $100.
c. Each collaborative artist of the overall “people’s choice” combined entry will each
receive a cash prize of $50.
28. Prizes - People’s Choice award
a. Voting by the public at the exhibition venue in the first two opening days will
determine a “people’s choice” winning entry, for which the artists involved will each
receive an additional prize.
29. The organisers reserve the right to amend or cancel the competition and these terms and
conditions without notice in the event of a catastrophe, war, civil or military disturbance, act of
God or any actual or anticipated breach of any applicable law or regulation or any other
event outside of the organisers’ control. Any changes to the competition will be notified to
entrants as soon as possible by the organisers via the email noted on entrant’s registration
form.
30. The organisers are not responsible for inaccurate prize details supplied to any entrant by any
third party connected with this competition.
31. Prizes are subject to availability and we reserve the right to substitute any prize with another of
equivalent value without giving notice.
32. Winners of the people’s choice will be chosen:
a. As a result of a popular vote conducted at the opening of the exhibition as measured
and recorded by the organisers at the venue.
b. Votes will be collected via a ballot system throughout the first two days of the
exhibition, and announced on the third day.
c. Prizes for the people’s choice winners will be distributed after the ballot has been
completed and verified. Winners will be contacted via sms or email.
33. It is expected that winning artists attend the opening for the presentation of prizes.
34. The organisers will notify the overall and second place winners when known and confirm their
attendance at the opening.
35. The organisers’ decisions in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and
no correspondence will be entered into.
36. By entering this competition, an entrant is indicating his/her agreement to be bound by these
terms and conditions.
37. The winners and finalists agree to the use of his/her name and entries image in any publicity
material for 1000 Words collaboration. Any personal data relating to the winner or any other
entrants will be used solely in accordance with current Australian data protection legislation
and will not be disclosed to a third party without the entrant’s prior consent.
38. The winners’ names will be published on the Facebook page after the exhibition opening.
39. Entry into the competition will be deemed as acceptance of these terms and conditions.
40. This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with,
Facebook or any other Social Network.
